Carrollton is set to host a new West Alabama festival and 5K at its mysterious downtown landmark. It's the Face in the Window Fest on Saturday (10/3).

Circuit Court minutes show that Henry Wells, a freed slave living in Carrollton (Providence Beat), was accused and convicted of the act. Two years after the courthouse burned, Wells was apprehended in Fairfield, Alabama (South of Aliceville) and died soon after his arrest from gunshot wounds sustained while attempting to flee authorities. And finally, we know that for 130 years since his death, individuals looking up at the courthouse have witnessed an eerie image peering out from the structure’s upper window. Even today it remains a ghostly reminder of Wells’ supposed threat in protest to his arrest — that being, to haunt his accusers for the rest of their lives.

Tours of the courthouse will be available!

Join me for the 5K first thing in the morning! The race will start and finish at the Pickens County Medical Center Campus. The entry fee is listed at $20 by 9/28/15. A discount for high school cross country runners. Day of race registration is available (that's what I'm doing). However, the fee may be a little higher. Each participant will receive a t-shirt. Plus, drinks and snacks will available. Awards for top finishers overall, as well as male and female age categories. Click here for the race application.
