It's the time of year when the calendar is loaded with races in Tuscaloosa.  Why not try one out?  Here are few tips to get you started!

Here are 7 Tips for the Beginning Runner:

(1) Shoes: You may think that old pair of shoes from the back of the closet will do for your running. You may want to reconsider that as experts will tell you that it may quickly lead to an injury. The right shoes with proper cushioning and fit for your foot will make a world of difference. Trust me. The last pair I had came with various aches and pains after some runs. Now, those pains are a distant memory. Try a running-specialty store to get an opinion on the right shoe. Otherwise, research online. Runner's World has a great shoe advisor. Once you have a good pair, dedicate them for only running. This way, you won't prematurely wear out the cushioning. I've heard a pair should last the regular runner about a year.

(2) Hydrate: Drink plenty of water.

(3) Set goals/track progress: Setting personal goals and keeping track of your progress will keep you interested. I use the free app, RunKeeper. It will track everything- map the course, the pacing and even how many calories burned. The app is social too, in that you can connect with friends or share on Facebook or Twitter. When you connect with friends on RunKeeper, you will be able to see their workout history. Here you go, a competitive incentive to keep you running.

(4) Playlist: The right music to inspire you to push! I'm constantly changing up my playlist, but I always end up keeping this one song on the list. The song, Guns N' Roses "Welcome to the Jungle." Always, the first song on my list on race day!

(5) Don't overdo it: Gradually build up your speed and distance over time. Be sure to give your body days off too.

(6) Have fun: Hit the streets and see stuff. Set goals and enjoy achieving them. Feel great after a good run. Get a running buddy. so the both of you stay movtivated!

(7) Try a 5k: Sign up for local 5k race. You'll quickly absorb the excitement of the competition, then the thrill of crossing the finish line.
